Talc
is hydrous magnesium silicate (Mg6 Si8 O20 (OH)4) and is mined
primarily in Texas, Montana, Vermont, New York and Oregon. It is
found in several different colors and crystalline forms. Talc is
important commercially because of its purity, softness, and luster.
Other important properties of talc are its chemical interest, high
dielectric strength, high thermal conductivity and low electrical
conductivity.
Major markets for talc are ceramics, paint, paper
and plastics, although dozens of other uses is agriculture, personal
care, mold release agents, etc., are part of the roughly 1-million
ton per year consumption in the United States.

Production and
Sales
American Talc Company owns and operated a large open
pit talc mine in Hudspeth County, Texas approximately 10 miles from
the city of Van Horn. Two other pits are open and available for
mining.
Over 200,000 tons per year of high quality talc
is provided primarily to the ceramics industry. Products for other
industries are currently undergoing development and testing and will
posted on this website when ready.
Reserves and
Development
An aggressive exploration program has resulted in
American Talc Company owning or having under lease approximately 20
million tons of talc and pyrophylite. Reserve development activities
include drilling, sample analysis, chemical analysis and
mineralogical assays.
In preparation for an expanded product slate,
American Talc has invested in mining and processing equipment which
increases productivity and flexibility.
