Wold Companies - History The Wold Companies were founded by John S. Wold, a well known figure in Wyoming's mineral industry who was named Wyoming's Oil/Gas Mineral Man of the Twentieth Century" by the American Heritage Foundation of the University of Wyoming. John Wold was the first Professional Geologist ever to serve in the United States Congress. He holds a BA degree from Union College and St. Andrew's University in Scotland and an MS in Geology from Cornell University, LLD (hon) 1991 from the University of Wyoming and DSci (hon) 2008 from Union College. John's oil field career started in 1939 as a Geologist with Socony Vacuum's Magnolia Petroleum Company in Oklahoma and then in Texas. In World War II, he was a volunteer Officer with the Navy Bureau of Ordinance and later served as a Gunnery and Executive Officer of a Destroyer Escort in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. In 1946, he returned to the oil fields with Barnsdall Oil Company's Gulf Coast operations, moved to Wyoming as Rocky Mountain Division Geologist and became an independent oil and gas producer during 1950. Wold Oil & Gas, later Wold Oil Properties, Inc. has been a significant exploration and production operation in the Rocky Mountains for close to sixty years. In the early 1970's John was involved in a joint venture coal exploration and coal lease acquisition programs on a nationwide basis with major coal companies including Peabody and Consolidation Coal Companies. In 1973, he founded Wold Nuclear Energy and with Page T. Jenkins was co-discoverer of Wyoming's Christensen Ranch, a uranium ore body. Wold Nuclear was the largest owner of the Highland Uranium mine, which became the largest uranium solution mine in the world. The Wold Companies have ventured from traditional oil and gas exploration and production into a variety of other natural resource industries GasTech, Inc. was established to develop deep underground coal gasification technology in Wyoming's Powder River Basin. GasTech is now associated with British Petroleum Company and Linc Energy of Australia. Wold Trona Company worked for years to develop soda ash technologies along with the Hazen Research and the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute in Golden, Colorado. American Talc Company in Van Horn Texas operates a talc min to add to the Wold Company portfolio. Whirlwind, LLC is currently developing wind energy in the American West to help meet the growing demand for domestic energy and to recognize the need for increased use of alternative energy sources. These energy and land companies continue the Wold tradition of involvement in all aspects of the nation's energy resources: oil & gas, coal, soda ash, talc, uranium and wind. |
